This whole area came into lime light after the erection of Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) at GT road, and the textile mill in the area with loads of human population turning here looking for jobs. A major stop of erstwhile Delhi Tram Service or TRAMWAY as it was popularly known made it accessible to the residents of old delhi. This area was politically very active during British rule and afterwards.

This area was an epicentre of work of political and social bigwigs of Delhi and Freedom Fighters like Aruna Asaf Ali, Communist Guru Radha Kishan popularly known as Guruji, Jansangh General Secretary Kanwar lal Gupta, Purshottam Goyal, Shivcharan Gupta, Wrestler Dara Singh, Dronacharya Guru Hanuman, Satpal, Bhupendra Dhawan, Mahasingh Rao, Lyricist & Poet Gulzaar, Santosh Anand, Film actor Manoj Kumar and many others.

In a special mention about the area 'The Hindustan Times' wrote in an article that despite being a prominent politician of Delhi Guruji was a man of masses loved by every class of the society in subzi mandi area. He undertook a fast unto death which lasted for 24 days for the betterment of the underprivileged class shortly after India's independence. A widely respected Guru Radha Kishan was a true social worker who nurtured his constituency like his family and thus he had no time left for himself or his own family, an area Municipal Councillor since time immortal.

Kamla Nagar was developed as an affluent residential area in the 1950s but its proximity to the University campus and an absence of popular market nearby turned it into a profitable commercial area.
